A timeless Concordia built in 1956 and on just her third long term and loving owner, RAKA has been both extensively cruised and day sailed, once again proving the quality and versatility of these exquisite vessels. Under current ownership she has been completely rebuilt with new plank keel, new deadwood, new stern post, all new laminated frames through the mid-body, new keel bolts, mostly new floor timbers, new cockpit, new teak decks.

The Concordias are known for their simple elegance (above and below decks). Finished with raised panel varnished pine bulkheads and doors and varnished Locust trim, raw teak sole, 2 large opening hatches, the one in the main cabin being the beautifully detailed "butterfly" type, four opening ports and six fixed ports. All opening ports and hatches are equipped with screens. On cooler or foggy days, a Concordia charcoal or wood burning stove will warm the vessel to comfortable temperatures.
Starting forward is the Forepeak with room for sail storage followed by two Concordia style berths. There is room for storage outboard of the berths and on full length shelves above. Next aft to starboard is a generous hanging locker, while across to port is the Head, fitted with manual W.C. plumbed via a Y-Valve to the holding tank, stainless steel sink with manual fresh water and storage.
Continuing aft is the Main Cabin with settees P&S. Concordia pipe berths with green corduroy cushions fold down for comfortable sleeping, outboard of which there is storage and above which there is storage in lockers and shelves. There is a centerline varnished cherry drop leaf table with four drawers for storage.
Next aft is the Galley split P&S around the companionway and engine box. To starboard is a 2 burner Luke gimballed propane stove with oven and storage, while to port is the sink with manual fresh water and the stainless line "icebox" fitted with a reconditioned Seafrost holding plate refrigeration unit. Ice box rebuilt in 2010. Good storage in lockers and shelves. The counter tops in the galley and other "flat wood work" received new teak veneers and were refinished in 2000.
Fractional rigged yawl with keel stepped Sitka Spruce spars. The main mast had all glue joints opened up in 05' and re-glued and then the spar was re-finished. The mast step was re-built by Concordia with the stainless beam and tie rods added and as part of the 2010 - 2016 re-build, her mast step was extended to better spread compression loads.
Primarily wired for 12 Volt DC Service. There is some limited 110 Volt service. The entire yacht was re-wired in 2010 including all distribution wiring

Yanmar diesel, fresh water cooled, installed 92' turns a three bladed Max Prop on a bronze shaft through a 2:0 to 1 Hurth reduction gear. As part of the rebuild the engine was removed from the boat, cleaned, painted, in general "gone over" given new hoses etc. There is no hour meter; based on use it was estimated to have 750 hours on it when purchased by the current owner with less than 500 additional hours since. New engine beds were installed in 2015 as part of the rebuild.
African mahogany planking on white oak frames on 10" centers structural timbers and deadwood are also of white oak and fastenings are bronze.
Topsides are painted off white with a black boot top and cove. The bottom is painted in an ablative red finish and is very fair with little or no build up. Decks are teak and were new in 2010.
Going back many years the hull has had periodic refitting including 1983 when most of the deadwood was replaced along with the first five strakes of planking P&S; stem bolts were renewed in 91'; in 98' the deadwood in way of the shaft log and rudder was replaced along with all of the keelbolts (new keel bolts are stainless); four floor timbers and bottom planking strakes numbers 6 through 10, but the serious rebuild started when the current owner purchased her in 2007.
RAKA has been given significant upgrades and overhauls:
1983: she was purchased by her prior owner and the re-fit was done by David Nutt, including most deadwood, overhaul of main mast and boom and replaced first six strakes of planking P&S Installed, new larger stainless steel fuel tank and new table.
1991-92: installed new engine 1995, new stem bolts 1997 Luke Stove and Propane System installed 1998,nNew deadwood in way of shaft log and rudder, new keel bolts, additional five planks/side renewed #6-10, four new floor timbers, stainless mast support; above work by Concordia 2000 Seafrost refrigeration, rebuilt engine enclosure, re-varnished galley and re-laminated counter tops as necessary.
2001: installed Raymarine below decks autopilot
2002: new primary winches
2004: new batteries
2005: Kerf sawed all glue lines apart in mainmast, re-glued and re-finished .
Starting in 2008, under current ownership, each winter a section of the boat was re-built starting midships. The interior joiner was removed in the mid-body, athwartship bulkheads and all floor timbers that had not been previously done were replaced (white oak) then all frames were replaced with new laminated frames in white oak. New chain plate knees were installed; also a new longer mast step was fabricated and installed to better spread mast compression loads. The yacht was also completely re-wired including a new switch panel and all wiring from the engine/batteries to the panel and then from the panle all distribution wiring. All electronics were also replaced in 2008.
In 2009 the forebody was done again removing interior and replacing floor timbers where necessary and replacing all frames with new laminated frames. All running rigging was replaced save one recently replaced halyard and most of the standing rigging was replaced.
In 2010 the after body of the boat was opened new floor timbers as necessary and mostly all new laminated frames. The cockpit was removed and replaced with the exception of the cockpit sole which had been re-done several years earlier and was re-used as it was in excellent condition. All of the side decks were removed, new deck beams installed as needed and all new marine plywood underdeck installed with 1/2" teak deck overlaid.
In 2013 a refresher survey was done and it was determined that the following work should be completed which was done in stages each winter from 2013 through 2016: the ballast keel was removed, new plank keel and all deadwood between the plank keel and hull and the plank keel was replaced, the stern post was removed and replaced and the engine beds were removed and replaced with all floor timbers underneath the engine bed being replaced as well.
In short we feel it is safe to describe this very fortunate Concordia as being COMPLETELY REBUILT.

Originally built for Reggie Saunders who planned cruising her as far as the South Pacific she has in fact been primarily a North East boat cruised and daysailed extensively. Mr. Saunders owned her for 27 years before RAKA was likewise cruised and daysailed out of Boothbay Harbor, ME by her second owner of twenty-four years prior to purchase by her current owner in 2007.
All of the owners have maintained an ownership history which includes details on any substantive work and goes back to origins with copies of letters between Reggie Saunders and Lewellyn Howland amongst many other notes and photos of interest which of course will convey with the yacht.
