Flamingo is located in the Channel Islands Harbor at the Peninsula Yacht Marina. This Ed Monk Sr. classic is turn key ready for a new owner! Her gorgeous features have been kept in tip top shape. Slip is also transferable.
The Flamingo was designed by Ed Monk Sr. and constructed in 1950 for Mr. Roy Gimble, a lumber entrepreneur in Shelton, WA. He used this yacht in his lumber business and raced her on weekends in classic cruiser races! When The Flamingo was featured in the Olympian Newspaper, Gimble was asked about using such a refined yacht in the logging business, and he was quoted as saying, “She has to earn her way..”
The last survey was performed on June 18, 2014, and is on file. The appraised value was placed at $298,000.00 with a replacement value of $900,000.00. The Flamingo is hauled yearly and painted with Petite Trinidad, maintained with aluminum anodes, and has bi-monthly diver cleaning. Her topsides are done yearly with Interlux Yacht Enamel, and brightwork is done continually with Petite Flagship. These are to be noted as no expense is spared in maintaining this yacht to the highest standards.
She was also featured as the lead yacht in the annual Shelton Christmas harbor parade, with the “Lumber Princesses” on board to wave at the admiring crowds. She is indeed a well known yacht in Puget Sound and spent many years under the ownership of a past Commodore of the prestigious Seattle Yacht Club.
She was discovered berthed at that club, by the present owner, after a one year quest for the right yacht, with travel costs for that search topping $23,000. After ownership of wood boats both power and sail for four decades, his standards seemingly would never be met..
His search for the “right” yacht took him from Los Angeles as far as Miami, Houston, San Diego, San Francisco, Alameda, Tacoma, Olympia, Vancouver, Victoria, and Seattle - with repeated visits over six times to several of those locations over the year. But no perspective yachts were chosen.
Then while about to make an offer on another yacht (in fact a sailboat) at Seattle yacht club he passed The Flamingo on the same dock and told his girlfriend as they walked past “Now here’s a real yacht..” There was no brokerage sign on the yacht, but the allure was there!
Weeks later after finding the owner, he traveled back to Seattle and spent two days with the owner aboard. At the end of that visit the past owner asked the current owner if he thought he had been carefully going over the yacht for a proposed purchase, to which he replied he indeed was doing so as that was why he was there. Instead the owner wryly smiled and said “Actually my wife and I were trying to decide if we would sell you the boat..”
It took over a month later when the current owner realized the serendipity at hand. His last boat had been a Monk, made of cedar on oak, had been sold in Lake Union decades earlier, and The Flamingo had been made in 1950, the same year of his birth, and had been enjoyed in Shelton WA - where the current owner spent summers at the family cabin!
He rushed back to Seattle and found the yacht in the slings about to splash down and head north for extended cruising. Climbing down the ladder she sat in the slings for two hours with the two men eye to eye. Finally they emerged and the lift operator was told to lift her back up. A four month restoration was about to begin, as a hand shake had sealed a deal, and The Flamingo had a new owner.
That was many years ago and hundreds of thousands of dollars ago. Perhaps your time is now, as the current owner has retired to the woods in The Olympic Peninsula.

Starting forward is the Chain Locker, that opens into the forward head: with electric fresh water toilet, copper pedestal sink with copper faucet, dual overhead shelving, privacy door, and two opening bronze ports.
Next aft is the Guest stateroom with queen Pullman to starboard with multiple drawer stowage beneath, dual hanging lockers, vanity with mirror to port, drawer storage, granite counters and four opening bronze ports.
Up four steps leading aft is the main salon with 3’ x 6’ hammered copper dining table with L-shaped Leather settee with opening lockers beneath the seats. To starboard is the porcelain covered cast iron wood burning fireplace with copper wood bin. To port is the lower helm with complete instrumentation, and full width granite counter. The salon has twin opening sliding side helm doors opening to oversized walk-bys with railings.
The salon has a pass through into the galley, separated by an intricate cut glass sliding panel of vintage art flamingos, and a large access hatch with grill in the cabin sole for ventilation into the forward most area of the engine compartment. It should be noted that the cabin sole, stem to stern has an overlay of ¾” Brazilian Rosewood with White Oak accent stripping, over original plywood sole. Overly was installed lagging into deck beams for a superior structural element.
Leading aft down the passageway to port is the entrance to the galley that is full width with 8’ L granite counters, copper farm sink, mahogany cabinetry, 5 burner propane range with oven, solenoid and exhaust hood, a Hobart commercial built-in microwave, 19 cu. ft. over under stainless steel 110v refrigerator, and overhead vintage USN deadlight with custom stained glass overlay of a flamingo.
Further down the passageway to port is the entrance to the Captain’s Quarters, and an air conditioning window unit in the upper bulkhead. On the port is a mahogany staircase leading to the flybridge, (which is further accessed by mahogany steps from the aft cockpit.) To starboard are two antique dressers, one mahogany, and one walnut with marble top. On the port is the head with electric fresh water toilet, copper sink and copper faucet, and shower compartment with glass door and sliding window.
On the starboard is a vintage queen size New Orleans French Quarter bed with headboard and footboard, LG flat screen with surround sound, opening port and mahogany access door leading to the aft cockpit.
The Engine Room access is in the forward bulkhead of the Captain’s Quarters, with two steps down into the roomy engine room housing the twin Detroits. There is easy access to all sides of the motors, full grating to the bilges, twin electrical panels, dual Fire-Boy fire prevention systems, twin battery banks, tool chest, and dry bilges.
The aft cockpit is of teak and mahogany, with transom door leading to a swim step with stern pulpit. The cockpit sole has a submarine style aluminum hatch leading to the aft bilges / lazarette. The cockpit has opening stowage compartments both sides, and steps on the port leading to the flybridge, as well as full sized walk-bys with stanchions, cap rails, and lifelines leading to the foredeck.
The flybridge has twin settees with opening seat stowage and mahogany dining table, a full-sized Weber barbecue with hood, and attached teak side table. The upper helm is on centerline with full instrumentation and a One Mile Ray Search light on a large sit-down teak dashboard full width. A hidden Dish TV antenna tucked beneath the coaming.
Moving forward, atop the cabin top is the fixed mast with radar mount, antennas, spreader lights, cabin top light, search light, twin stainless steel handrails, chimney stack with charley noble, and custom stainless steel boat hooks.
Forward on the foredeck is a Griffith’s watertight hatch with fixed deadlights over the guest stateroom with access/escape ladder affixed in that stateroom. The foredeck has oversized Stainless steel cowls on dorade boxes that funnel air into the engine room, a heavy duty anchor windlass for the all chain rode, heavy bollard for mooring lines, and stainless steel wrap around bow pulpit. It should be noted that further for docking are 17” cast bronze cleats amidships, and on the stern quarters as well.
The Flamingo has full Sunbrella covers numbering approximately 15 for various elements of the yacht.
