51' Hinckley 1993 MOMENTUM

BROKER DESCRIPTION

MOMENTUM, a head-turner in any port, is the best and most versatile Hinckley Sou’wester 51 around. She was originally built by a knowledgeable yachtsman as his second build with the Hinckley Company. The design brief was for a performance sailing yacht that could compete successfully, and yet be easily cruised by the owner singlehanded or with relatively inexperienced guests in comfort and safety. By all accounts both goals were reached with great success. MOMENTUM has been lovingly cared for and is highly updated throughout. She sports fresh Awlgrip (2016), rebuilt engine and generator (2015), newer electronics, newer sails etc. She is ready for her next ocean race or cruise to Maine at a moment’s notice.

Hand-laid hybrid Kevlar/fiberglass hull, cored with Airex for additional strength per weight, reinforced with longitudinal stringers and additional gridwork in high-stress areas. The deck is built of a custom Kevlar S-glass, cored with variable-density Klegecell for exceptional strength as required by engineering specifications. The deck is set into a 6” flange in the hull and glassed and bolted into place.

During construction, strength was optimized and weight was absolutely minimized in all construction aspects of the yacht, in an effort to enhance overall performance. For example:

  • All interior overheads are of Formica laminated to high-density Klegecell foam to reduce weight above the waterline
  • Custom HRH stem iron welded rather than cast (saves nearly 30 lbs. at the bow)
  • Custom Kevlar fabrication of lightweight foredeck locker
